Batavia Sumlin

Higher Ed Representative

Ms. Batavia Sumlin currently serves as a Instructional STEAM Coach having previously taught computer programming and technology for Stockbridge High School, in Stockbridge, Georgia.   She currently holds a dual Masters of Education and Science from Strayer University and a Bachelors of Applied Science from Clayton State University.

Ms. Sumlin began her career as an Information Systems Operator in the United States Army.  Her career choice ignited her passion for technology and furthered her lifelong learning pursuits.  After several years of working in industry, her skills and outgoing personality landed her a teaching position at a local private school in Henry County. Ms. Sumlin’s unique global perspective allows her to infuse real world technical application to her students both in and out of the classroom. In addition, Ms. Sumlin has shared her technical knowledge and skills with teachers across Georgia at the annual Georgia Educational Technology Convention, the Georgia Independent School Association Conference and multiple in house professional development mini sessions.

As an active member of several technology associations, Ms. Sumlin is an ambassador and mentor to both her colleagues and scholars and is known for her collaborative style and determination to bring a voice for computer science equity and career technical education into decision-making policies. Ms. Sumlin has assisted several students in discovering their passion for technology, which has led to students obtaining scholarships and internships with Verizon, Google, and Georgia Tech.  This effort resulted in an increase of female and minority learners requesting to take computer science and to participate in the Technology Student Association.
